Coronavirus restrictions have lifted, days are lengthening and the weather is warming up. It’s the perfect time to rediscover Hull’s pubs and bars and other venues. The city now has three Low Ale Trails – guides to the perfect places for beers, gins, cocktails and more with low or no alcohol content.
The first Low Ale Trail, based in Hull’s Old Town launched back in 2019. There are now further trails, one within the Theatre Quarter, close to the New Theatre and Hull Truck, and another in the popular Avenues area, near the University.
There are 15 venues on the Old Town trail, the Avenues has eight and the Theatre Quarter six. All offer at least three high-quality no-alcohol beers, and other alternatives. Many also offer food, music and live performances and the Avenues trail includes a board game café.
The trails have been developed in partnership with Hull City Council’s public health team. They are designed to meet the growing demand for low- and no-alcohol options.
Gilda Nunez, programme lead for drug and alcohol services at Hull City Council, said: “We knew when we launched the initial trail that it was something people wanted. Since then, the demand has only increased for alcohol-free drinks that look and taste like a craft beer, a good gin, a cocktail or other favourites.
“It’s likely that more of us will be going out again as the weather gets warmer. We’ll be socialising in person, going back to live theatre, returning to the regular nights out we had before the pandemic. But that doesn’t have to mean being drunk. A lot of people want the social side without the hangover and inconvenience of getting home late at night.
“One in five of us want to drink less. Heading to a pub or bar that you know has great low or no alcohol options makes that easier. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing either. Having a mix of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks still helps reduce the number of units you consume and can make the difference between having a couple of drinks and a binge drinking session”.
