Hull City Council’s Streetscene services shortlisted for an award at Keep Britain Tidy’s annual awards ceremony.
The authority’s efforts to make environmental improvements for local residents has seen it shortlisted in this year’s Keep Britain Tidy Awards Network Awards 2022.
There are ten award categories, each with three shortlisted contenders, and the council has beaten off national competition to become a finalist in the ‘Waste Performance of the Year 2022’ category.
Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, Allison Ogden-Newton, said:
“I would like to congratulate Hull City Council on being shortlisted for one of our annual awards.
“We know that people want to live in places that are clean and tidy and local authorities have a massive role to play in this and should rightly be recognised for their efforts.
“We are thrilled that so many authorities entered our awards and, again, the standard was incredibly high. We look forward to seeing representatives from Hull at our awards ceremony in Birmingham in February.”
The award winners will be decided on the submission of collective data about the services and ongoing projects, and the overall service in comparison with others within the Keep Britain Tidy network.
Hull’s Streetscene services is nominated for its ‘Waste in the right place’ project which has seen success in improving the quality of recycling collected in the city’s blue bin collection scheme. Since 2009, recycling rates have increased from 25% in 2009/10, to 49% in 2019/20.
The project works by increasing engagement with users, policy and process adjustments, changes at waste transfer stations and encouraging positive behaviour change overall.
Hull’s Streetscene services will go up against London Borough of Brent and Northumberland County Council to win the award.
The awards recognise and celebrate local authorities that are committed to making significant improvements to the environment on people’s doorsteps, from community engagement work to waste enforcement work.
This follows two nominations for Hull City Council in the APSE’s Performance Network Programme event earlier this year.

The Keep Britain Tidy Awards will be presented at the charity’s annual Network Conference at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole hotel on Thursday February 10th, 2022.
