A new supported housing charter, thought to be the first of its kind nationally, has been introduced by Hull City Council to help landlords and service providers to drive up the standard of supported housing in the city.
Supported Housing helps people, many of whom have complex needs, to live independent lives.
Hull, like most councils with a significant non-council commissioned supported accommodation sector, has established a good working relationship with its landlords and service providers.
However, there are some whose accommodation and support packages fall below the level required for their clients.
Councillor John Black, Hull City Council’s portfolio holder for housing, said: “Traditionally, the supported housing sector has been largely unregulated, which led to our decision to establish a dedicated team.
“Its role is to increase standards so that accommodation is hazard-free, well-managed and that vulnerable tenants are properly supported in their communities.
“Our overall approach, including the charter, is innovative and backed by partner organisations and other providers, plus it is supported by enforcement activity across other council service areas.”
