Not only does today mark the start of summer with the longest day of the year, it is also the start of National Picnic Week. We are fortunate to have some great outdoor spaces, both within and out of the city boundary so grab your blanket, sandwiches and frisbee and head down to one of our top five spots.
East Park, Holderness Road, Hull
Open 7.30am until dusk daily
130 acres of beautiful parkland means you’ll have plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the sunshine and an ice cream. And with the animal education centre, historic splashboat ride, boating lake and playpark, there’s plenty for all a full family day out.
West Park, Walton St, Hull
Open 7.30am-9pm daily
With a fantastic new play park, paddling pool and skatepark on site and imposing backdrop of the KCOM stadium, West Park is a great location with something for everyone.
Pearson Park
Open 7.30am-4pm daily
Currently undergoing a massive National Lottery Parks for People refurbishment to restore some of the parks Victorian grandeur, Pearson Park is a stunning park with plenty of land for kicking a football about. Close to lively Newland and Princes Avenues, you can pick up your picnic basket contents en route.
Humber Bridge Country Park
Always open
This stunning nature reserve is a haven for wildlife with woods, meadows and ponds to explore. With 21-hectares of space you could forget you’re only a few minutes’ drive from the city, however the Humber Bridge is visible from most locations, you have a constant reminder you’re ‘home’.
Beverley Westwood
Always open
Beverley Westwood has for years been a perfect spot for summer days out and snow-day sledging alike! With so much open pastureland to explore, there’s always plenty of room for a picnic – just be careful you don’t get too close to the cows, they have a nose for a good sarnie.
