Two community events today (Tuesday July 20) will give people a chance to meet and reconnect.
The celebrations, taking place on Peel Park, Peel Street, and next to Pearson Park, off Princes Avenue, will be among the first to be held in the city since the government removed remaining Coronavirus restrictions.
Local charities Hull Help for Refugees and Welcome House, which support refugees and asylum seekers, alongside Pearson Park Mosque are hosting a picnic in the park. An open invitation has been issued to anyone in the local community to come and share food from around the world, 11.30am – 1pm. The community picnic marks Eid Al-Adha, a key celebration for Muslims, where sharing food is central.
The second event takes place 2pm – 6 pm on Peel Street. With a family focus, all are welcome to drop in and join team sports including football, creative fun with the scrap store, fairground rides, food and more. The focus of the celebration is on bringing all local communities together.
Cllr Aneesa, Akbar, Portfolio Holder for Communities at Hull City Council, said: “These past eighteen months have forced all of us to stay apart from each other – we’ve been prevented from meeting our friends and making new connections.
“It’s still important to take precautions and do what we need to feel safe, but opportunities for our communities to come together feel both welcome and significant.
“Simple things like eating together, playing sport, creating something, having fun can be very powerful and events like these have a role to play in our recovery from the isolation we’ve all been through.
“While the celebration at Peel Park has plenty to entertain children, it really is for anyone and everyone. Many of us are keen to connect with other people right now, so whether you want to meet up with people you’ve missed or get to know your neighbours, you’ll be made to feel welcome”.
