Low-cost funerals available from Council’s Bereavement Services

Hull City Council’s Bereavement Services is helping families at a difficult time by offering funeral services from as little as £800.

The starting cost of an unattended cremation service at the Chanterlands Crematorium is almost half the average price for a direct cremation (according to the Sunlife Cost of Dying Report 2024).

Chanterlands Crematorium is the oldest established crematorium in East Yorkshire.

It is accredited to a Gold Star standard by the Institute of Crematorium and Cemetery Management (ICCM) and has served the local communities of Hull and the East Riding for decades.

It has modern facilities and dedicated, experienced, professional bereavement officers are on hand to help make the necessary arrangements, at what is a very emotional time for those mourning the loss of a loved one.

Families can be assured that their loved one will be treated with great dignity, care and respect throughout the funeral process.

Ashes can be collected from the Crematorium, usually by the next working day, meaning no anxious and uncertain waiting.

Hull City Council has a number of beautiful spaces where ashes can be scattered, including Eastern Cemetery or the recently remodelled Priory Woods Cemetery in the west of the city.

There are also various options at our peaceful sites to help families memorialise their loved one in a fitting way.

Richard Barker, Bereavement Services manager, said: “We are a local and trusted service, where families can rest assured that their loved ones will be well looked after.

“Our caring, helpful and dedicated staff can have ashes ready to be conveniently collected by the next working day.

“The Chanterlands Crematorium can be also used for a low-cost cremation following a memorial service that has taken place at an alternative location, and various options to suit individual preferences are available.”

Lisa Buttery, Hull City Council’s head of Customer Services, said: “We’re aware that costs associated with saying goodbye to a loved one can be high, so we’re offering options to keep those costs as low as possible.

“Our attended funeral service at Chanterlands Crematorium starts from £900, significantly cheaper than the average cost nationally, which comes in at several thousands.

“This is just one of many services we offer, which also includes increasing popular natural burials, and areas to scatter ashes of pets.”

Councillor Jack Haines, Portfolio Holder for Communications and Communities, said: “It’s always a difficult time when you’ve got to make funeral arrangements, so the Council is trying to make things a bit easier by offering low-cost services, whilst maintaining high quality care.

“There are a number of affordable options, and experienced Bereavement Services staff can help guide families through the process.”
