Hull residents preparing for a festive night out are being urged to stay safe and plan ahead for their journey home.
Hull City Council is reminding party-goers to only use licensed hackney Carriage Vehicles or pre-booked private hire cars, and not to use unmarked cabs or anyone advertising unlicensed taxi services on social media.
When it comes to taxis, the message is simple; Book it, Hail it, Avoid it. Either book a private hire vehicle, using the phone or an app, or hail a hackney carriage, more commonly known as a black cab. Avoid anyone else offering a taxi service.
Cllr Mark Ieronimo, whose portfolio includes Licensing, said: “As we head into the final days before Christmas, many people will be enjoying a night out with friends or family. Planning how to get home safely should be an essential for any celebration.
“Follow the guidance, and either book a cab through an app or over the phone, or get a Hackney carriage at a taxi rank. Don’t be tempted by unmarked cars or people touting for business on Facebook or other social media sites.
“Drivers of licensed taxis must meet rigorous standards, including a DBS check, the proper insurance to carry passengers, and safely-maintained vehicles.
“With an unlicensed cab, there is no guarantee they will honour a price quoted, take you to your destination or arrive as promised. The driver will not have had a background check and will not be insured”.
Report unlicensed operators who are advertising on social media or by any other method by calling the council’s licensing team on: 01482 615462 or by emailing taxi@hullcc.gov.uk.
