Staff and students at Bridgeview and Whitehouse were presented with their Modeshift STARS Approved Travel Plan accreditation

Hull SEND providers secure national travel plan recognition

Two providers of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) support in Hull are celebrating after being presented with certificates to recognise their efforts in promoting active and sustainable travel to staff and students.

Bridgeview, a special school for pupils with social, emotional, mental heath as well as communication and interaction needs, and the Whitehouse pupil referral unit, have both achieved ‘Approved Travel Plan’ awards through the Modeshift STARS Education Programme.

The national STARS education scheme recognises schools and other educational establishments that have shown excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable and active travel.

Bridgeview and Whitehouse secured their accreditation by delivering road safety educational initiatives like ‘Balance Bike’ lessons, ‘Learn to Ride’ and ‘Bikeability’, to ensure pupils gain valuable life skills and build confidence.

‘Daily Mile’ walks are also a regular part of the school day, promoting health, wellbeing and a strong sense of routine.

At the heart of their achievement is student empowerment, which has seen learners thrive as they gain independence.

As a SEND provision, the schools have embraced sustainability in ways that work for their community.

While walking and cycling may be limited, bus and taxi sharing have played a vital role in reducing the schools’ carbon footprint, showing that every effort counts.

Hull City Council offers schools and education establishments in the city the chance to join Modeshift STARS Education for free as part of its strategic objective of promoting road safety and active travel choices, with the programme delivered locally through the local authority’s supplier, First Step Sports.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council, said: “We’re committed to building a greener, healthier Hull by encouraging active and sustainable travel across all sectors of our community. It’s inspiring to see schools like Bridgeview and Whitehouse leading the way—not only embracing the Modeshift STARS programme but adapting it to meet the needs of their learners.

“The success of our Modeshift STARS Business programme has already shown what’s possible. Now, with more schools and education providers getting involved, we’re seeing how schools are fostering a culture of sustainable travel that’s beginning to take root among students—and that’s a powerful step toward achieving our city’s long-term goals.”

Maria Hope, principal at Bridgeview Special School, said: “Bridgeview and Whitehouse are really proud to have achieved the award. We are committed to promoting active travel to all of our pupils as it not only reduces environmental impact but has a positive effect on their wellbeing and achievements.”
