Hull City Council’s portfolio holder for transportation, roads and highways has thanked council staff for keeping the city’s roads moving and pavements safe during the recent cold snap, which has seen temperatures plummet and icy conditions affecting Hull’s network.
Councillor Mark Ieronimo went ‘back to the floor’ to meet the authority’s gritter drivers and street cleansing teams, who have been treating highways, cycle paths and footways around the city on a regular basis over the last week to ensure residents and businesses can go about their day-to-day lives.
During this week’s cold spell, the council’s fleet of six gritters, based at Stockholm Road Depot, have treated the network eight times, covering a total of 2,192 miles, and have used 240 tonnes of grit.
During the previous winter season (2022-23), the team treated the network 48 times, covering a total of 13,020 miles, and used a total of 1,364 tonnes of grit.
Street cleansing teams have also treated footpaths in pedestrian areas and on streets with high footfall.
“The work our teams do to keep the city moving during the winter months is immense,” said Councillor Ieronimo.
“Preparations for these types of weather conditions takes place well in advance of any ice and snow arriving, ensuring that our operations run smoothly and efficiently.
“It was brilliant to go along to the depot, speak to our dedicated staff and learn all about what goes in to treating the city’s network.
“Seeing this work, first-hand, helps you fully appreciate everything our staff do in support of our residents and businesses, most of which happens when many of us are sleeping soundly at home.”
In line with its winter weather plan, come the spring, routes will be reviewed, and any additional roads, bridges and footpaths will be added, where required.
