Event marks start of new partnership between Hull Culture and Leisure and Hull City Councils youth arts initiative Creative Voice, Hull Youth Development Service and Freedom Road Creative Arts
Young people aged 11 to 18 will take part in free workshops with arts professionals at Hull City Hall as part of a two-day Urban Summer Festival next week.
Participants will explore the Hull UK City of Culture 2017 season three theme of freedom using music, visual art, physical theatre and street dance over two days from Wednesday, August 23 to Thursday, August 24.
The festival also marks the start of an exciting new youth arts partnership between Hull Culture and Leisures New Theatre and City Hall and the Hull City Councils Arts Development initiative Creative Voice, which works in partnership with other education and arts sectors including Youth Development Service and Music 4U.
It offers young people the chance to take part in a variety of creative arts workshops in their own time. They can progress towards festivals, exhibitions, performances and Arts Award.
The aim is to engage more young people in a range of creative arts opportunities with plans in place to expand these once the theatre has re-opened following its incredible revamp.
Councillor Terry Geraghty, Chairman of Hull Culture and Leisure Board and Portfolio Holder for Culture and Leisure, Hull City Council, said: This new partnership is a fantastic initiative which will allow young people to access excellent arts activities initially at the historic Hull City Hall this summer and going forward at Hull New Theatre once it re-opens following its £16m major refurbishment.
Working together with a number of creative partners shows our commitment to creating a lasting cultural legacy beyond 2017 and ensuring the state-of-the-art facilities at the theatre are enjoyed by future generations.
Ruth Drake, Arts Development Officer, Hull City Council, said: The Urban Summer Festival will offer young people the chance to experience many different art forms. It will be fun and relaxed with a focus on trying new things.
The Youth Development Service Summer Activity programme and Freedom Road Creative Arts are also Urban Summer Festival partners.
A total of 50 young people will take part in the Urban Summer Festival and a limited number of free places are still available.

Young people can also benefit from a number of incentives including discounts on selected shows and priority booking by joining the Extras membership scheme for Hull New Theatre and Hull City Hall.
