People in Hull are being warned against accepting services from rogue traders after reports of two men knocking on doors and claiming to be council officers.
Hull City Council has received reports of the men door-knocking in Tranmere Close, Conway Close and Redbourne Street.
The pair are offering residents a rubbish removal service, or to have any overgrown vegetation cut down. They are then taking the money without completing any of the work.
One of the men refers to himself as Alex, has an Irish accent, is 6ft, well-built and has blonde/ginger hair. The second man is of a slim build with greying hair. Both are wearing hi-vis vests and using a white transit-style van with red and yellow stripes with “road maintenance” written on the side.
Doug Sharp, assistant city manager for Streetscene, said residents should always establish whether a person is authorised to take their waste away before giving them money.
He said: “I would encourage people to be vigilant, and ask to see a registered waste carrier’s certificate.
“Check them out with the Environment Agency to ensure that you are not engaging in this illegal activity, as failure to do so will result in an offence.”
