2020’s Christmas may not be like any other, but communities around Hull have been coming together to ensure memories will still be made this festive season.
Schools, businesses, volunteers and even neighbours have been busy across the city organising everything from advent calendar walks to light displays, covid-safe grottos and Christmas competitions.
Amongst the many things happening across the city, Santa has been on his sleigh visiting children; school pupils are performing Christmas songs with sign language, Christmas carol concerts are moving online, local neighbourhoods have been decorated and lit up and community groups have been out delivering Christmas hampers to our most vulnerable residents.
Every resident in the city is invited to join Hull Truck Theatre’s Christmas performance from the comfort of their own homes at 7pm on Tuesday 22 December, as Prince Charming throws open the palace gates for his annual Christmas ball, a festive fairytale adventure sprinkled with surprises, sparkle and a hint of magic. The panto is free to watch for residents across Hull and East Yorkshire this year thanks to a partnership with Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
Local theatre company Middle Child are also bringing their annual panto online too with Pattie Breadcake: Into the Pantoverse free to households from Saturday 19 December.
A project from creatives at Back to Ours and We Made This Hull has seen 140 trees in 85 locations across Hull and beyond decorated with handmade creations by hundreds of local people of all ages, including nurseries, schools, care homes, community groups, churches, libraries and a host of other talented makers. This free trail is on until Sunday 27 December and maps can be downloaded here.

“2020 has been such a difficult year for so many, and with a Christmas like no other fast approaching, it’s been amazing to see Hull’s neighbourhoods come together to offer so much to our residents.
“Right across the city there are so many wonderful initiatives taking place and anyone looking for covid-safe activities can more than likely find what they’re looking for right on their doorstep.
“Our area teams know exactly what is taking place in their local communities, so I would encourage anyone looking for something to do over Christmas, to visit their local area team Facebook page.”
