A fun event with a serious message will celebrate the refurbishment of Shaw park on Hull’s Orchard Park Estate. This Friday (September 20) young people aged 11 – 18, as well as the wider community are invited to come together and enjoy activities, interactive programmes, sports, stalls and more. Organised in partnership by Hull City Council and Humberside Police, the celebration addresses risks to young people, and highlights local opportunities and support.
The event is part of the Clear-Hold-Build project taking place on the estate under the community owned HOPE brand. The project seeks to reduce organised crime in Orchard Park through effective problem-solving in partnership, increased engagement with communities and targeted activity to address this crime type.
There will be live and VR demonstrations from emergency services, including a dangerous driving scenario and the jaws of life; fitness tests and tug-of-war run by Forces recruitment services; sports and activities from Hull FC, Hull Kingston Rovers and Tigers Trust; first aid skills; lifestyle advice including drink and drugs; recruitment, including apprenticeships, cadets and careers advice; plus stalls, activities and much more.
Cllr Linda Tock, Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People, Families and Learning, said: “There is a wealth of activities for young people to enjoy at this event, which also marks the refurbishment of the park being completed. People can expect sports and activities to get involved with, exciting demonstrations and chances to learn new skills, as well as career advice and options.
“The event follows a huge amount of positive work within Orchard Park. It celebrates where we are now, while also helping pave the way for a bright future for young people. They can find out about career paths, as well as life-skills and support to stop them getting drawn into criminal and anti-social behaviour.
“Support, care and opportunities play a huge part in preventing crime and keeping everyone in our communities safe. This event really reflects that”.
Community Policing Inspector Jamie Campbell said: “In the last twelve month, the estate has flourished which without the local community members, the help of all the local businesses, and Hull City Council would have never been possible.
“As well as disrupting criminality, we have spent a lot of time engaging with the community to understand what they need from us, but also what resources we have available on our doorstep and how this could help to divert young people away from crime.
“It’s the people in the community that I’d like to thank, as what they are doing, is helping steer children away from crime whilst helping Orchard Park continue to prosper”.
The event takes place at Shaw Park, Hall Road, Orchard Park, Friday September 20, 3pm – 7pm. Media are welcome to attend; please RSVP to arrange interviews with organisers.
