Proactive road maintenance programme to take place across the city

Council staff and machinery undertaking surface dressing of a road

Hull City Council is set to launch its annual surface dressing programme to give 12 key roads across the city a much-needed upgrade to improve safety and extend their lifespan.

The city-wide programme will see over 54,000m2 of road treated, the equivalent of 7.5 MKM Stadium pitches, and will start on Monday 20 July 2026 and be completed by Wednesday 29 July 2026, weather permitting. No work will take place over the weekend.

This year’s programme focuses on roads that form part of Hull’s major road network and main bus routes, which are showing early signs of wear and deterioration.

Surface dressing is a preventative maintenance measure that seals the road surface, helping to avoid more serious damage and costly repairs in the future.

By acting now, the council aims to extend the lifespan of these roads, improve surface quality and enhance skid resistance – making them safer for all road users.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure, said: “Looking after our roads isn’t just about fixing potholes when they appear – it’s also about preventing them in the first place.

“Surface dressing is one of the most effective ways we can protect roads that are beginning to show signs of wear, helping them last longer and reducing the need for more extensive repairs in the future.

“We’re targeting some of Hull’s busiest routes, including key bus corridors, to keep the network in good condition and improve safety for everyone who uses them.

“We know these works can cause some short-term disruption and I’d like to thank residents, businesses and everyone travelling through the area for their patience while we carry out this important maintenance.”

Preparation work, including patching, crack sealing and iron work adjustments are in the process of being carried out, where necessary, to ensure the roads are ready for treatment.

To keep residents informed, advanced warning notices will be erected on some sites and letter drops will be carried out on others prior to work starting at each location. In addition, the contractor will distribute leaflets with further details about the work and what residents can expect.

The roads that are included as part of the programme, as well as the proposed dates and traffic management arrangements, are as follows:
