This year’s Pride in Hull will be a full civic event, the city’s Lord Mayor has announced.
It means all councillors from Hull City Council are invited to join the parade, dressed in their traditional robes, with the Pride flag flying proudly from the roof of the Guildhall.
And Councillor Steve Wilson, Lord Mayor and Admiral of the Humber, said some councillors have requested to decorate their robes with Pride-style accessories.
The council is an official partner of the event, which will be opened by the Lord Mayor on Saturday.
Cllr Wilson said: “Pride is a wonderful family event and I was very keen to ensure the council had a key role.
“Making the day a civic event means that all the councillors have the chance to support this brilliant occasion and some have even requested to decorate the robes with Pride-style accessories which I have, of course, agreed to as I certainly will be.
“In my opening speech, I’ll be joined by my husband, daughter and our 15-month-old granddaughter and I will take the opportunity to tell people that there are no obstacles to getting where you want to go in life and you can be exactly who you want to be.
“My sexuality has never caused my any issues in my career and I will be encouraging everyone that if they want something, go and get it. There are no barriers if you are true to yourself.”
A parade kicking off the celebrations will leave outside Hull College in Wilberforce Drive at noon, before heading down Whitefriargate and round into Queens Gardens, where the event will take place from 12.30pm to 8pm.
