Hull’s three household waste and recycling centres could open seven days week from September 2021.
The proposal comes after there was a huge increase in residents using the centres to dispose of their household waste during the coronavirus pandemic.
This means that the centres, which are located in Burma Drive, Sutton Fields and Wiltshire Road, are proposed to reopen on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Councillor Rosie Nicola, Portfolio Holder for Waste Management, said: “We’ve listened to public feedback and recognise that there is a need for the three waste centres to be open seven days a week. I am delighted that our strong financial management of the Council’s budgets over the last year can enable this to happen.
“The last 18 months have been unprecedented, and the amount of time people are spending at home has increased significantly. Residents are carrying out more home DIY and garden renovations, resulting in an increase of disposal waste.
“In order to keep up with the demand we’re taking steps to revert back to the original opening times, and know this will complement our existing excellent waste services, including the option for free bulky item collection.
“We’re aiming to fully reopen the centres from September at the latest, and are in discussion with the sites operators.”
The move to a seven day opening will reduce waiting times, queues and improve customer experience for residents.
In addition to the recycling centres, Hull has a comprehensive range of waste management services for residents to dispose of their waste including:
- Household bin collections – one of the most comprehensive services in the country
- Bulky household waste collection – one of only a few councils nationally to offer a free service to remove the first five bulky household items. To book this, call 01482 300300 or visit hull.gov.uk
- Bring out your rubbish days in local ward areas
It is intended that the three waste and recycling centres will open 10am-5pm, Monday – Sunday, by September 2021.
A final decision will be made at the Cabinet meeting next month.
