Hull has been named as one of England’s greenest areas.
The city is fourth on a list of “Areas for a Beautiful Future” – compiled using recycling rates and numbers of homes with a smart meter.
Hull beat all local authorities in England aside from Cheshire West and Chester in first, neighbouring East Riding in second and Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire in third in the Areas for a Beautiful Future index.
The data, compiled by Smart Energy GB, is designed to celebrate the communities across the UK taking action to be more sustainable.
Councillor Daren Hale, deputy leader of Hull City Council, said: “This is fantastic recognition for the city. Credit should start with the people of Hull, who clearly recognise the importance of taking action to create a sustainable future.

“Recycling and installing smart meters are two are simple, cost-free ways for every household to do their bit to benefit the environment.”
The Areas for a Beautiful Future index has been designed to challenge beliefs that being sustainable is too expensive or too much effort.
Three-quarters of people in the UK think they could do more to be more sustainable and energy-efficient in the home, a survey of 2,000 people conducted by One Poll showed.
And a third worry about the future of their children or grandchildren.
A fifth think it costs too much to be sustainable, while more than a quarter believe it is too much effort. One in 10 feel they won’t make an impact as one individual.
Two-fifths were not aware that filling up the fridge – even with bottles of tap water – is more energy-efficient and sustainable.
Smart Energy GB is a campaign set up to help residents to understand the benefits of smart meters.
A smart meter is the next generation of a gas and electricity meter. They are being installed by energy suppliers in every home in England, Scotland and Wales.
Smart meters come with an in-home display screen that shows you exactly how much energy you are using in pounds and pence, in near-real time, to bring an end to estimated bills.
