Hull City Council have retained their Investors in the Environment (iiE) Green level accreditation for the ninth year running.
The accreditation is a national environmental scheme designed to help organisations save money, reduce their impact on the environment and receive endorsement for their green credentials.
The council achieved a score of 81% and Green level, the highest level possible.
The report from iiE stated that the council have maintained a good Environmental Management System (EMS) and continued to drive down emissions in many key areas. The council is also expected to readily maintain Green level next year.
Overall carbon emissions were down approximately 1 tonne of carbon less emitted per member of staff than the previous year. The council were also praised for having an excellent understanding of performance and future target setting, with good knowledge of what will support target achievement and what the barriers may be.
Councillor Rosie Nicola, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services at Hull City Council said: “I’m delighted that we have managed to retain this accreditation for the ninth year in a row. The council is dedicated to reducing carbon emissions and we have already laid out our ambitions to become carbon neutral by 2030.”
The Hull 2030 Carbon Neutral Strategy was published in 2019 and is built around eight themes of heat, power, mobility, consumption, fair transition, carbon sequestration, skills and jobs and innovation. It sets out the key challenges and opportunities within each theme and an initial set of actions. You can read more about the strategy here.
The news comes as the council has this week announced its participation in the new Oh Yes! Net Zero campaign, encouraging local businesses and residents to drive down their emissions and take positive action on climate change.
