Renovation work on the formal beds surrounding the Rose Bowl in Queens Gardens will commence this autumn, giving the historic landmark a new lease of life.
The formal bed areas surrounding the Rose Bowl Fountain have been the jewel in the crown of Hull City Centre’s green spaces for many years.
The colourful and uplifting landmark is admired by residents, city centre workers, visitors and has achieved national recognition in both the Yorkshire and Britain in Bloom campaigns.
However, over the years the beds have become uneven, the quality of the grass cover has deteriorated, the soil poorly retains water and the grassed areas have become mounded.
To give the area a new lease of life, all eight segments of the formal beds will be renovated this autumn.
Works will include stripping the beds entirely and removal of all existing turf, releveling the entire area. The soil will then be cultivated and improved through slow-release fertilisers and organic matter.
The area will then be re-laid with high quality turf in the late autumn of 2023.
Fast forward to spring 2024, the new beds will be cut out of the newly established turf and a single tree (Silver Birch) will be planted in the centre of each segment.
These Silver Birch trees will act as a year-round focal point and will allow for underplanting with spring bulbs, which can be left in situ for future years to come.
All being well, the flower beds will be fully planted for summer 2024.
Councillor Julia Conner, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “The council are pleased to announce that the formal beds surrounding the historic Rose Bowl in Queens Gardens will be undergoing renovation this autumn.
“The Rose Bowl is a historic site which is used all year round by the general public and for city run events. These works will enhance the beauty of this vital green space, whilst also providing a beautiful place for residents and visitors to enjoy.”
Andrew Wilson, Streetcare, and Open Spaces Strategic Manager for Hull City Council, said: “The Rose Bowl area in Queens Gardens is an important and cherished green space in Hull.
“This renovation will futureproof the space for residents to enjoy for many years to come. I am looking forward to seeing the area once the works are completed.”
The renovation works will be carried out by Hull City Council’s Grounds Maintenance Team.
