‘Love Hull’ litter letters have installed in Ennerdale roundabout, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
The litter letters were made by students at Hymers College and installed by Hull City Council’s waste team as part of an initiative to raise awareness around the problems of littering and to encourage people to dispose of waste correctly.
Councillor Anita Harrison, portfolio holder for Streetscene, said: “We are very proud of our city and we are grateful that students from Hymers College pitched in to help make a difference and look after Hull’s environment.
“Littering is unacceptable and we know that residents and visitors alike are keen to see a clean and tidy city, however this is an element of individual and collective responsibility when it comes to littering.
“We want people to show love for their city and make a conscious choice not to drop litter – love Hull and put your litter in a bin.”
The council currently spends more than £2m on street cleaning, fly-tip removal and litter bin emptying every year, collecting more than 4,000 tonnes of rubbish in the process.
Councillor Harrison said: “We have approximately 2,000 bins across the city, so there is no excuse for this anti-social behaviour.”
The council is currently initiating a pilot project with an external organisation to clamp down on litter louts across the city.
