A stunning jewel-cabinet – once gifted to Queen Victoria – is coming to Hull next month.
Ferens’ latest exhibition will feature the masterpiece, designed by Ludwig Grüner, as part of an ongoing partnership with Royal Collection Trust.
Queen Victoria’s jewel-cabinet will be the centrepiece of an upcoming exhibition, displayed amongst Victorian highlights from Ferens Art Gallery’s permanent collection, including the much-loved painting, The Lion at Home by Rosa Bonheur.
The cabinet was an award-winning exhibit at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and was a cherished gift from Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert. Since that time, it has been cared for in the Royal Collection and remains a significant royal artefact.
Gilded on every surface, the exquisite jewel-babinet is laden with portraits and medallions bearing the many faces of Queen Victoria’s family. It was this same family that later visited Hull in 1854.

Councillor Marjorie Brabazon, Chair of Hull Culture and Leisure Limited, said: “It is fantastic that the Gallery continues its ambitious exhibitions programme in partnership with Royal Collection Trust. It is also great that visitors will have the opportunity to see some of Hull’s favourite Victorian artworks alongside this masterpiece.”
Following Queen Victoria’s visit to the city, the monarch became one of Hull’s most recognisable figures, with Queens Gardens, Queen’s Dock and Queen Victoria Square all bearing her name. Ferens’ latest exhibition will give a new generation the opportunity to recognise Queen Victoria’s influence on the city, and admire one of her most treasured gifts.

This free exhibition will run from Saturday 4 April to Sunday 5 July in Gallery 5.
The Gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday 11am to 4pm.
