Traffic signals to be upgraded at key city centre junction

Hull City Council has announced that it will be upgrading the traffic signals at the junction of Ferensway and Anlaby Road next week, to reduce carbon emissions, improve traffic flow and enhance safety.

As part of the council’s ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions across the city, the existing traffic signals will be replaced with modern, low‑energy LED technology, significantly improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

To keep disruption to a minimum, the upgrade has been carefully scheduled to start on Monday 16 February, to align with half‑term – when traffic levels are typically lower than usual.

The scheme is expected to take five days to complete, depending on the weather. To ensure the safety of the contractors and the travelling public, four‑way temporary traffic signals – including full pedestrian crossing facilities – will be in place.

However, if the work is completed ahead of schedule, the junction will revert to permanent signal operation as soon as possible.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council said: “As a council, we are always working proactively to improve and enhance the city’s highway network for road users, and pedestrians.

“This upgrade is a smart and sustainable investment in one of our city centre’s busiest junctions. By installing modern, energy‑efficient LED signals, we’re reducing the council’s carbon footprint while improving reliability for everyone who travels through this area.

“We’ve planned the work carefully to minimise disruption, carrying it out during half term, so residents and businesses experience as little inconvenience as possible.

“However, as always, we appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we work to improve this key city centre junction.”

These upgrades will be made by SWARCO on behalf of the council.
