It is national Record Store Day tomorrow and over 200 independent record shops across the UK will be celebrating the contribution they make to our musical lives.
Whilst, in Hull, we may lament the loss of the glory days of vinyl emporiums like Sydney Scarborough’s under City Hall or affectionately recall spending our bus fares home on the latest top ten single and too much pic-n- mix in Woolworth’s, there’s a huge vinyl resurgence in the city and lots for crate diggers to have a good rummage through, as well as lots of new limited edition and exciting release for record store day itself…take a look…
Wrecking Ball Music and Books, Prince’s Quay
Wrecking Ball are marking record store day in style with limited edition titles including: David Bowie, Jeff Buckley, The Prodigy, Madonna, Fleetwood Mac, The Ramones and Pink Floyd. Sales start from 8am. Free hot drinks and parking for vinyl lovers queuing from 6am.
Warren Record Store, Queens Dock Chambers 47-49 Queens Dock Avenue
Warren Records are joining record store day for the first time. They are supported by and directly support the Warren Youth Project, a non-profit charity that supports and empowers young people in Hull. All profits made from sales will go to support the vital services the Warren provides to youngsters in the city. They will have a whole load of ‘new’ used records landing in the store for record store day as well as stacks of new releases to choose from. They are expecting queues so turn up early to make sure you get your favourite release!

Better still, you can peruse your vinyl purchases with an artisan coffee or a beer from the microbrewery and treat yourself to lunch from stalls covering cuisine from all corners of the globe.

A stalwart of the British high street and one of the few retailers, perhaps, to have steadfastly weathered our evolving musical purchasing habits. HMV. If you want something different they’re inviting you in to come and have a browse and chat with their helpful and friendly staff.
Disc Discovery, 53, Spring Bank
Just slightly out of the city centre, a round-up of Hull’s vinyl-offering had to include this crate-diggers paradise. Visitors have been known to lose hours in this Aladdin’s cave, packed to the rafters with vinyl and music memorabilia. Lots of bargains to be had.
