Thousands celebrate Hull KR homecoming

30,000 Hull KR fans celebrated the team homecoming on Sunday, with crowds waving the teams off at Sewell Group Craven Park, lining the streets into the city centre, and filling Queen Victoria Square for the City Hall balcony event.

Following their 8-6 win at Wembley on Saturday against Warrington Wolves, fans hurried home in order to congratulate their heroes back in Hull, with around 8,000 people on the parade route and 22,000 in the city centre.

Cllr Mike Ross, leader of Hull City Council said: “Sunday’s homecoming event exceeded all my expectations in every sense. The number of residents we saw come out to celebrate Hull KR’s historic win was unbelievable.

“Days like this really do show the city at its best. Huge congratulations again to Hull KR, the club has done the city proud!”

Captain Elliot Minchella lifts the trophy for fans

Paul Lakin, Chief Executive of Hull KR said: “On behalf of everyone at the club, I’d like to thank all supporters and residents of the region to who turned up to show their support.

“To see thousands line the route for a glimpse of that famous old trophy, and the joy and emotion in people’s eyes was really special. Then to walk out onto that balcony and share such a special moment with you all, are memories that will last a lifetime.

“We’d like to also thank Hull City Council for their invitation, and for hosting such a fitting celebration.”

Chief Inspector Rob Danby said: “The Hull Kingston Rovers parade was a great celebration for the city, and we were pleased to support Hull City Council and our partners in ensuring everyone could enjoy the event safely.

“Officers supported the parade throughout the evening, and we’re happy to report that the atmosphere remained positive. It was great to see the community come together to celebrate in a respectful and enjoyable way.”
