Hull, seen by many as a sporting city, will take steps next week to promote sport in the city up a league. The question of how to enable more people to get active, keep moving, and engage with sport will be the subject of a high-profile event next week. Hull City Council will bring together local and national leaders in sport, including National Governing Bodies of Sport, Sport England, professional sports clubs and sporting organisations from across the city.

The event will take place at Hull History Centre on Monday March 16. The council will outline its ambitions to get more local people involved in sport and physical activity, share current priorities and opportunities to strengthen the city’s sporting offer, and explore how partners can collaborate to achieve a greater impact. Attendees will also hear more about the partnership work between the city and Sport England and consider how sport and activity could help improve outcomes for communities across Hull.

The session will be an opportunity for those gathered to explore what more they can do to promote sport in the city and help get more people involved. The event will be followed later this year by wider engagement sessions with grassroots sports clubs.

Cllr Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said: “I know just how important sport is to so many people in the city. Whether it is the professional clubs who so many fans support week in, week out, the time spent taking family members to training or matches, or going out and taking part in sporting activity oneself, it is a vital part of life for so many. Sport has so many benefits, from health, skills or the social aspects.

“There is so much more, though, that can be done to both encourage local residents to take part in sport here in Hull and support that can be provided to the many valuable organisations that do tremendous work in the communities across the city.

“This event is the first step in bringing together the right people and organisations to make this happen. I am looking forward to seeing new partnerships emerge and the commitment to more activity on the ground right here in Hull.”
