Could you volunteer to be a Hull maritime tour guide?

The team behind the major Hull: Yorkshire’s Maritime City project is looking to recruit a small team of volunteers who are passionate about showcasing the city’s nautical history.

The volunteers will be asked to prepare and deliver a range of guided tours around the city centre, between Hull’s historic maritime sites, which are expected to begin this summer.

Visitors will learn about Hull’s maritime heritage and how our exciting maritime project will take shape over the next five years.

They will receive a whistlestop tour of the Hull Maritime Museum, Arctic Corsair at the North End Shipyard and the Spurn Lightship in Hull Marina.

Organisers looking for people with an interest in the maritime history of Hull and experience of working with the public.

Full training will be provided to achieve Institute of Tourist Guiding White Badge accredited qualification.

Applicants must be able to commit about 40 hours of training, including lectures, practical sessions and communications training.

Councillor Daren Hale, Hull City Council’s deputy leader, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in developing Hull’s tourism offer related to the city’s maritime heritage, as part of a major National Lottery Heritage Funded project.

“Participants will build their confidence and develop a range of new skills as well as gaining valuable experience and accredited training. Volunteering makes an incredible difference.”

Dave Todd has volunteered for nine years, delivering a range of guided tours at Hull Maritime Museum and later on the Arctic Corsair.

He said: “Volunteering is a great way to give something back to the city and be part of a fantastic team.  This new guided tour will be a learning opportunity and I’d recommend it to anyone with a love of heritage and meeting people.”
