People in Hull are being warned they will face enforcement action if they are found dumping waste after thousands of pounds in fines were handed out to fly-tippers.
Residents are being encouraged to use services provided by Hull City Council to dispose of and recycle their waste – and not hand over waste to rogue contractors.
Fines were handed out to eight more people after evidence of unlawful waste disposal was obtained by the council’s environmental enforcement officers. The fines were issued under section 33 Environmental Protection Act 1990.
- A man was fined £400 after household waste was fly-tipped on Tunis Street, Hull in October this year.
- A man was fined £400 in response to CCTV evidence relating to fly-tipping household waste on Beverley Road, Hull.
- A man was fined £400 after household waste had been found fly-tipped on Dock Street, Hull in October this year.
- A man was fined £400 after complaints of fly-tipping in the area of Alaska Street, Hull after a mobile camera was installed to target fly-tippers.
- A woman was fined £400 after household waste was witnessed by an environmental improvement officer being fly-tipped over the rear wall of the property and within a passage to the rear of the property on Dorset Street, Hull in October this year.
- A woman was fined £400 after complaints of fly-tipping in the area of St Georges Road, Hull after a mobile camera was installed.
- A woman and a man were each was fined £400 after complaints of fly-tipping in the area of Division Road, Hull after a mobile camera was installed.
Councillor Anita Harrison, portfolio holder for waste management at Hull City Council said: “We will continue to take a tough line on incidents of fly-tipping. The council will investigate all incidents and, where evidence identifies those responsible, we will take enforcement action.”
To ensure waste is not fly-tipped, residents should follow these guidelines:
- Dispose and recycle household waste through regular kerbside collections
- Hold off on any large clear-outs or DIY projects until lockdown restrictions are lifted

- If you use a contractor, always ask to see a waste carrier’s licence and check them out with the Environment Agency by calling 08708 506506 or visiting https://environment.data.gov.uk/public-register/view/search-waste-carriers-brokers
- Don’t pay cash and always ask for a receipt – if prices seems too good to be true, they probably are. If waste is subsequently found fly-tipped, the resident could be fined or face prosecution
