Council helps preservation of Garden Village Conservation Area

Hull City Council’s ongoing commitment to preserving the city’s conservation areas has been outlined through the publishing of a new character appraisal and management plan (CAMP) for Garden Village Conservation Area.

The new CAMP provides new and refreshed planning guidelines for how new developments should take place in the area.

It can be used by all residents of Garden Village Conservation Area to determine if alterations to their properties would be acceptable and will help make the decision-making process quicker.

A formal notification period is currently underway until 30 June which introduces a requirement for planning permission for homeowners to create new accesses and parking areas in front gardens and current parking areas. Existing Article 4 Directions in Garden Village controls alterations to roofs and boundaries.

Residents were consulted on the plans last spring through leaflet distribution and two well-attended public meetings.

Further communication on the formal notification period in the form of letters and site notices is taking place, with an additional letter to be sent to stakeholders in early August containing full details of the formal adoption of the Article 4 Direction.

The new CAMP and associated planning guidelines outline the council’s continued commitment to preserving Hull’s conservation areas, whilst also contributing to promoting the city’s heritage.

Cllr Paul Drake-Davis, the council’s portfolio holder for economic renewal, housing and organisational development, said: “The Garden Village Conservation Area is characterised by early 20th century properties of uniform design.

“The new character appraisal and management plan will help to maintain the fantastic heritage and history of this area, while giving residents more clarity and certainty over what alterations or developments would be supported.

“I’d like to thank the residents who took time to provide feedback on the council’s consultation and attend the two public meetings.”
