Three days of captivating contemporary dance events will take over the streets of Hull this weekend.
Hull Dance has provided an independent Hull voice on culture and dance in the city since being set up by Hull City Council’s Arts Development Team to build interest in contemporary dance in the city.
The group’s diverse programme of performances, talks and development opportunities will be launched this evening. Here are some of the highlights:

A mixture of free and paid dance events across the city will see leading companies from Lithuania join UK based dance artists for a weekend of performances in unusual spaces. Transgressions asks questions such as how people with dual-cultural heritage and how people use dance to find their identity as individuals and artists. Using charcoal and real-time projected visuals, this performance examines movement as trace, a constant act of mark making and erasure. The work hints at our relationship to place, migration and home – the paths we take, the spaces we fill and the absences we leave behind. A DJ plus the chance to join the artists and make traces as part of the work will follow the performance.

Hull New Theatre Lounge Bar
This film collaboration between Zivile Virkutyte and Ieva Sakalyte was developed during a residency at Machol Shale Dance House in Jerusalem. It explores inner and outer boundaries and the role and importance of status. A second sharing will take place at 1.30pm. A second showing will take place at 1.30pm.

This site-specific piece is inspired by the Aristophanes’ play – a comedy in which all the world’s birds create a new city in the sky. Lithuanian Dance Theatre Company Okarukas combines contemporary dance with Butoh practice, creating an interdisciplinary approach to its work.
Butoh Workshop

This workshop, taught by members of Okarukas Dance Theatre, will explore the main elements of Butoh and is suitable for anyone interested in exploring the technique as a way to gain more authentic ways of moving, including actors, dancers and live and performance artists. Places are limited and payment on the door will be cash-only so booking in advance is advised.
