Derelict building in St Andrew's Dock Conservation Area.
St Andrew's Dock is an historic part of Hull's maritime heritage.

Future plans to shape St Andrew’s Dock

A historic part of Hull is subject to proposed changes as part of Hull City Council’s commitment to reviewing all 26 of the city’s conservation areas.

A new character appraisal has been produced for St Andrew’s Dock Conservation Area, with public feedback on the proposals wanted.

Originally designated in 1990, the character of the conservation area has changed over time, with several buildings being lost.

The plans have identified the remaining special interests of the conservation area of historic and communal value.

The council would like to engage with those with a connection to St Andrew’s Dock, including those with especially personal connections, such as the former Hessle Road fishing community.

Thoughts of others who worked on the dock and surrounding area, plus crews of ships which operated out of the dock and crew members’ family are also welcome.

The character appraisal will be used to help to shape future planning decisions and developments in the area.

Cllr Paul Drake-Davis, portfolio holder for economic renewal, housing and organisation development at the council, said: “St Andrew’s Dock Conservation Area is one of the most important and visible areas of maritime heritage outside the city centre.

“The council wants to hear from those with a vested interest in the area and those that would like to see a positive use for the area, so I urge people to have their say whilst they can.”

The public consultation is now live and available until Saturday 31 January 2026 at yoursay.hull.gov.uk/st-andrews-dock-conservation-area.

An informal drop-in consultation is being hosted by Hull Fishing Heritage Centre at 355 Hessle Road, HU3 4BE, from 11am to 2pm on Tuesday 6 January 2026.

A public meeting will take place at Hull’s Guildhall on Alfred Gelder Street in Hull, HU1 2AA, from 2-4pm on Thursday 15 January 2026.

A copy of the proposed new character appraisal is also available to read in the Guildhall.
