‘The environment belongs to everyone’: Hull City Council call on volunteers to join mass litter clean up

The Council is calling on residents to take part in a mass litter pick, to support Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean campaign, which runs from Friday 13 March to Sunday 29 March.

Offering their support, the council is delighted to back the charity’s plea and urges residents to pledge on the charity’s website to pick one bag, or more, of litter from streets, parks, beauty spots and beaches, to protect our vibrant communities and precious wildlife habitats.

Hull City Council’s Love Your Street team will also be joining in with their own litter pick during the campaign.

If you’d like to get involved and organise your own litter pick, please email loveyourstreetproject@hullcc.gov.uk to request branded Keep Britian Tidy litter bags, litter pickers and equipment.

If you make the pledge with Hull City Council, snap some action shots and tag us on Facebook (@LoveYourStreetHull) to be in with a chance of winning a £10 M&S voucher.

There are five vouchers up for grabs, which will be awarded to the top five litter picking heroes – we will announce the winners at the end of the Great British Spring Clean so make sure you tell us how many bags of litter you have collected!

The charity reports that last year:

  • 95% of participants agreed that they felt they had made a difference to their local area.
  • 88% of people who took part in the Great British Spring Clean agreed they feel part of a national movement that is taking action to tackle litter

Councillor Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment at Hull City Council, said: “This is a fantastic campaign that we are proud to support. I encourage everyone to make a pledge, learn why the Spring Clean matters, and help spread the message about caring for our environment.

“However, the work doesn’t end with this campaign. Community groups are active across Hull all year round, and I urge people to see how they can support them.

“Tackling litter is everyone’s responsibility, and together we can create a cleaner and safer city.”

The Great British Spring Clean brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to make a difference to the environment on our doorstep.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, said: “We are so grateful for the amazing support from Hull City Council.

“The Great British Spring Clean is a fantastic way for councils to support residents to really show their pride in where they live, and connect with like-minded people, while taking serious and immediate action to protect the environment on their doorstep.

“We are humbled to see our army of Litter Heroes volunteers carrying out these acts of kindness to make the planet a cleaner, safer place for our future generations.”
