People across the country will next month be given the chance to vote on who represents their constituency in Parliament in the General Election.
In Hull, three MPs will be elected.
The election takes place on Thursday 12 December.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. You need to be registered to vote by Tuesday 26 November
If you have recently turned 18, moved house or changed your name, or have never registered to vote, you need to register. Register to vote here.
If you are a student you can vote either at your home address or term time address. Residents who registered to vote in the previous election and whose details have not changed will still be registered to vote.
2. The notice of election has been published today
Matt Jukes, Hull City Council chief executive and elections acting returning officer, has published the notice of election in the Guildhall. Three constituencies will be contested in the city – Hull East, Hull North and Hull West and Hessle.
3. Candidates for each constituency will be announced on Thursday 14 November
In Hull East, 65,124 electors will have a chance to vote on which candidate they would like to be their local MP. In Hull North, 62,912 electors are eligible to vote for their MP, while in Hull West and Hessle there are 59,015 electors. Find out who is standing here.
4. Here’s how you can vote
Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday 12 December. Stations will be given on polling cards which all registered electors will receive from Monday 14 November.
- Those who cannot get to a polling station can vote by proxy or by postal vote. Application forms are available from www.yourvotematters.co.uk
- The deadline for new postal vote applications or for changes to an existing postal vote is Tuesday 26 November at 5pm
- The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is Wednesday 4 December at 5pm
5. Results will be announced in the early hours of Friday 13 December
When the polls close at 10pm, boxes from all of the polling stations will be brought to the Guildhall. The results will then be declared by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Steve Wilson, in his role as official returning officer, once the votes are counted.
