A film about the reality of living with domestic abuse will be shown next week. Tuesday December 10 marks the end of 16 days of activism which began on November 25 – White Ribbon Day, and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls.
The 90-minute docu-drama Love? Is being shown at an event attended by many agencies to raise awareness of domestic abuse domestic abuse specialists from across Hull. It is produced and directed by Sam Beckinsale; herself a survivor of controlling and coercive behaviour.
The film is also being screened in a number of other events and locations around the region – it is hoped a total of 3,023 local practitioners will all be watching in unison. The number 3,023 is the total number of victims and their children currently being supported by domestic abuse services in the Humberside Police force area.
Cllr Linda Tock, whose portfolio includes domestic abuse, said: “Hearing from survivors of domestic abuse about their lived experiences is extremely powerful and important. Bringing professionals together to watch, discuss and hear directly from the filmmaker will be really valuable.
“A total of 3,023 people watching at the same time is a huge number – it very starkly highlights just how many local people are experiencing domestic abuse right now.
“Our local practitioners already work closely together to prevent domestic abuse and provide support when it happens. The screening is a chance for them to come together, share the experience of watching the film together, and spend time building networks and connections.
“The multiple screenings are also intended to raise awareness of just how common domestic abuse remains, and that we all have a role in preventing violence against women and girls”.
If you or someone you know is suffering domestic abuse of violence in any form, call the police non-emergency 101 number, or 999 in an emergency.
