Hull City Council has announced plans to introduce new traffic calming measures in the Meadowbank Road area of west Hull as part of its ongoing commitment to improving road safety.
The programme of works will include the introduction of a priority chicane on Meadowbank Road, just south of the junction with Morris Road.
This will give priority to vehicles travelling south and it is expected that this measure will help to reduce vehicle speeds in conjunction with the introduction of a 20mph Zone in the area.
To create the chicane, a new traffic island will be constructed, requiring sections of the existing concrete carriageway to be reconstructed.
A chicane is a traffic calming measure that narrows the road, encouraging drivers to slow down. Vehicles heading south will have priority through the narrowed section, while traffic travelling in the opposite direction will need to give-way.
The works will also see improvements to the existing pedestrian crossing facilities by reconstructing sections of the footways, renewing the kerbs, and providing additional tactile crossing points and bollards.
To ensure the safety of the contractors and the travelling public, these works will be completed under a full road closure, with a vehicle diversion route in place via the existing one-way system on Cardigan Road and Roslyn Road.
Access will be maintained for residents, waste collections and emergency vehicles.
Pedestrian access at the Meadowbank Road and Morris Road junction will be maintained for the duration of the works
Work is set to commence from Monday 10 August and is expected to be completed by Wednesday 9 September 2026.
This scheme is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to improving road safety and promoting active travel options to all residents.
Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure said: “Improving road safety is a top priority for the council, and these measures on Meadowbank Road will not only help to reduce vehicle speeds but also create a safer community for people walking in the area.
“We thank residents for their patience while the works are carried out and encourage them to plan ahead and follow the signed diversion route during the road closure.”
This scheme has been funded by the local ward councillors ward budget following concerns raised by local residents.
The works will be completed by Hull-based PBS construction on behalf of the council.
