Hull City Council will soon begin essential maintenance work to upgrade the footpaths on North Bridge.
Due to general wear and tear, the footpaths on the bridge – which connects George Street to Witham – have reached the end of their service life and need replacing.
To keep disruption to a minimum, the scheme will be carried out in two phases, replacing one footpath at a time so pedestrian access is maintained throughout.
Starting with the northern footpath, work will commence from Monday 12 January and is anticipated to be completed by Friday 23 January, weather depending.
To allow these works to be done safely, the northern footpath will be closed during this period. However, a signed diversion will be maintained for pedestrians via the southern footpath. The bridge will remain open to road traffic.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council, said: “North Bridge provides a vital crossing between east and west Hull, so its maintenance is essential. By replacing the footpaths, we aim to futureproof this crossing for pedestrians and accommodate the Freetown Way Cycle Scheme.
“Splitting the work into two phases means we can maintain access, which I hope will reduce disruption for pedestrians and local businesses.
“Thank you, in advance, for everyone’s patience and corporation as we work to improve this key city centre route.”
Details of the second phase of the programme- replacement of the southern footpath – will be announced closer to the time of delivery.
The scheme, which is part of the council’s routine bridge maintenance programme, will be completed by Midland Industrial Flooring Limited (MIFL) on behalf of the council.
