The winner of the new Nadine Fudge One to Watch Youth Enterprise Award is 12-year-old school pupil Cydney Newlove of St Mary’s College for her business – Cydney’s Cave, which sells arts and crafts, with a focus on crochet cat hats.
As part of the award, she has won £250 from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank and ongoing support from Hull City Council.
The award aims to honour and reward enterprising young people in Hull. It was named in the memory of former Lord Mayor and Councillor Nadine Fudge in 2019.
Daren Hale, Leader of Hull City Council said: “I wish to offer my congratulations to Cydney for winning the Nadine Fudge One to Watch Youth Enterprise Award. I have every confidence that my late friend and colleague Nadine, who was deeply respected figure in the St. Andrew’s area and was passionate about all her constituents, in particular young people, would be extremely impressed with Cydney.
“As a council, working with partners like the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank and Hull BiPC, we have a commitment to expanding the youth enterprise eco-system and ensuring practical support is available. Programmes like the Making Changes for Careers Programme offers business skills sessions as well as an understanding of the Big 13 Enterprise Skills to enable more young people like Cydney to have the experience of being their own boss. I am sure she will be a great ambassador for the city.”
Cydney Newlove, winner and founder of Cydney’s Cave said: “It means so much to me to have won this award as I am only 12! I think it is amazing how Hull City Council are trying their best to support the young entrepreneurs.
The £250 I have been awarded from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank is really going to help me boost my small business and I am so excited to see where it goes, with the support of my family, teachers and friends and now Hull City Council.”
Vicky Hudson, Head of Computer Science, Business, Economics and Enterprise at St Mary’s College said: “It is great how much support is offered to young entrepreneurs, especially during the pandemic when they have really needed the focus. The support and help from Hull City Council and the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank is always appreciated as they believe that our young people with the right support can be truly enterprising.”
