A summer schedule packed with activities is heading to Hull. From bug-hunting and den-building to street dance, story-telling and circus skills and everything in between, there really will be something to get everyone excited.
The city’s annual Healthy Holidays programme is back and bigger than ever for 2021. Starting on July 26 and running right through the summer break, every activity includes a nutritious food offer and is completely free.
There are sessions aimed at all age groups, to be held right in the middle of local communities in all parts of Hull. From smaller-scale activities offering the chance to get active or learn new skills, to family fun days with entertainment, fair rides and petting zoos.
For 80 lucky young people, there will be an extra treat. Every child in the city has received a Golden Ticket inviting them to take part in the summer of fun. Of those tickets, 80 are extra special – their recipients will receive a high street shopping voucher and a bumper activity pack. Those with a ticket need to keep hold of it and head to the Healthy Holidays website to find out if it’s a winner.
Cllr Hester Bridges, Deputy Leader of Hull City Council and Chair of Hull Health and Wellbeing Board, said: “The Healthy Holidays programme is always hugely popular. We know that thousands of children across the city take part and the sessions form an important part of holiday plans for so many families.
“After young people have missed out on so much over the past 18 months or so, it feels more important than ever to give them chances to have fun, be active and things to look forward to this summer. The golden tickets are a very exciting bonus – everyone should make sure to visit the website and check theirs. The site also has full details of everything we have planned.
“It’s important to recognise that while the aim is to make sure young people have fun, the programme was also created to address serious issues which stem from the inequalities we see in Hull, including food poverty and inactivity. Our aim is to ensure all families have the opportunity to access nutritious food and a range of fun, exciting activities”.
Pauline Turner, Director of Children, Young People and Families Service at Hull City Council, said: “We know that through lockdowns, isolation and home-schooling, young people have missed out on so much. Naturally, that has included opportunities to be active and spend time with friends. Healthy Holidays is an opportunity for every child in the city to catch up on having fun.
“Activities are happening at children’s centres, parks, youth centres and other locations that are easy to walk to, based in the heart of local communities. The pandemic has been extremely hard for everyone and we know many parents have had a tough time financially and emotionally. Healthy Holidays provides all families with opportunities for their children or young people to try new things, be active, learn new skills and eat well.
“The website also has lots of other resources and ideas for free, easy activities to do at home”.
