As the nation celebrates its first-ever Thank You Day, millions of people across the country are thanking key workers who have helped them to get through the past 18 months. Hull City Council Leader Daren Hale offers his thanks.
Today marks the first-ever national Thank You Day, giving us all a special chance for people to say thank you to the most deserving people in our communities.
For us in Hull, it represents the chance to thank the city’s key workers such as teachers, health and care workers, delivery drivers and so many others who have been on hand to help people through what has been an incredibly difficult 18 months. It is also a thank-you to many of you who supported our local residents, businesses and the most vulnerable in our communities.
More than 16 million people in Britain will join in events in their local communities to mark this day, according to new polling by ICM Unlimited. This would make it the biggest mass participation event since the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
It is the result of a grassroots campaign to hold the country’s biggest ever thank-you party in these communities as a way of thanking each other and building on the community spirit that so many felt during lockdown.
Whether it’s neighbours for checking we were okay, delivery drivers, volunteers giving the vaccine, or kids entertaining us – there are so many people to say thank you to.
That’s why we’re joining in the national #ThankYouDay on Sunday 4th July.

In just a month, the campaign has won huge support from hundreds of organisations including the NHS and local authorities as well as big names like Gary Lineker, Michael Sheen, Dame Judi Dench and Raheem Sterling.
As a local authority, it is a chance for us to give thanks to our communities for supporting us by following the guidelines every step of the way to keep Hull Covid-safe, no matter how difficult things got.
We hope you will join us in thanking those people who have done so much to get us through these tough times as the end edges nearer. Thank you all.
