Overnight closures for investigations on Ennerdale Bridge

Ennerdale Bridge will close for two nights next week to allow for essential investigations on the lifting span of the structure.

Earlier this year, the bridge on Raich Carter Way experienced a fault that affected one of the lifting spans. To identify the fault and proceed with the necessary repair work, the council must carry out essential investigations alongside the contractor, Fairfield Engineering Solutions, and Rexroth, the manufacturer of the hydraulic system.

To ensure these investigations are carried out safely and with minimal disruption to traffic, overnight closures will be in place on Raich Carter Way on Wednesday 11 September, and Thursday 12 September from 10pm to 6am the next day. A signed diversion route will be in place for motorists.

Motorists are urged to plan their journeys in advance and use an alternative mode of transport if possible.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, portfolio holder for transportation, roads, and highways, said: “We understand that this is a popular route for motorists, but it is crucial that these investigations are conducted, and that the fault is located, to maintain a safe and reliable transport link for residents, commuters, and visitors.

“While I recognise the inconvenience caused by these closures, I appreciate that they are scheduled overnight to minimise disruption.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone in advance for their patience and support.”
