George Street car park to close for deep clean and repairs

George Street multi-storey car park will be temporarily closed next week to allow for a programme of repair works and deep cleaning of the areas affected by a car fire earlier this year.

The fire, which took place on level three, led to the closure of the upper levels on safety grounds. Since then, Hull City Council has been working with local contractors to develop a plan to clean and repair the affected area, ensuring the car park can safely reopen in full.

This programme of works has now been finalised and will begin on Monday 6 July. It is expected to take approximately seven days to complete.

The works will include power washing the affected area on level three, as well as repairs to the surface, including potholes and line markings across all levels of the car park.

To ensure these works can be carried out safely and efficiently, the entire car park will be closed to motorists for the duration of the programme.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council, said: “We recognise that the partial closure of George Street car park has been frustrating for many residents, businesses and visitors.

“However, safety is our top priority. Following the fire, it was essential that we took the time to fully assess the damage and put in place the right programme of cleaning and repairs to make sure the area is safe, clean and ready for use again.

“This short-term full closure will allow us to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible. We look forward to fully reopening the car park once the works are complete, restoring full access to this key city centre car park.”

The work will be completed by Clearway and EC Surfacing on behalf of the council.
