Mark Jones MBE Centre opens, promoting youth entrepreneurialism

A new enterprise centre aimed at promoting youth entrepreneurialism was officially opened today, Wednesday 3 June, at 161 High Street in Hull.

More than 150 individuals representing young entrepreneurs, schools and the youth enterprise eco-system were invited to an open-day led by the Lord Mayor of Hull, Cheryl Payne, alongside Ian Cass, chair of Microbusiness Alliance.

The building at 161 High Street has undergone a significant refurbishment, supported by £1.5m of the government’s levelling up funding, which will support young people in Hull to realise their enterprising journey.

It will act as the base of Hull City Council’s Youth Enterprise & Microbusiness Team which delivers the Making Changes for Careers programme.

The building had been named the Mark Jones MBE Centre in memory of the former director of regeneration at the council, who was particularly committed to support young entrepreneurs in Hull.

Cllr Paul Drake-Davis, the council’s portfolio holder for economic renewal and housing, said: “The opening of the Mark Jones MBE Centre is a significant step forward in the council’s commitment to help create an enterprise culture, which is vital to establishing a vibrant, sustainable and inclusive economy.

“It is a much-needed friendly and welcoming space for young people in Hull, offering the chance to grow their skill-base and self-confidence by learning from local businesses experts and inspiring peers, before using what they have learned to strengthen Hull’s economy.”
