Work to improve Stoneferry Corridor began in June earlier this year.
Once completed, the transport scheme will aim to reduce congestion by nearly 50 per cent, cut down accidents by at least 40 per cent within the next 15 years and improve air quality for residents and businesses in the area.
Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for economic investment and regeneration, said: “These upgrades will transform this part of the city and improve traffic, cycle and pedestrian flows.
“The works are taking place outside of the city centre, demonstrating the council’s overall commitment to expanding Hull’s transport network by investing in schemes to tackle congestion and repairing worn road surfaces.
“We understand that over the next year there will some congestion as these critical works take place to transform transport connectivity in this part of the city, and we ask motorists to bear with us as we aim to improve the road network for their long-term benefit.”
Plans including widening of the footpaths and installing street lighting from Stoneferry roundabout to Holwell Road roundabout are currently underway.
This work is expected to take five weeks with a signed diversion in place for pedestrians.
Following the completion of the footpath works, localised kerb realignment and footpath reconstruction works will be taking place on or in the vicinity of the Holwell Road Roundabout. Footpath diversions will be in place and clearly signposted during these works.
As part of the works utility diversions are also taking place on the Leads Road/Sutton Road junction and on Sutton Road across the road from Aldi.
This work is scheduled to carry on over the next month. Trial hole investigations to find existing utilities will also begin over the next few weeks on the Leads Road/Sutton Road junction.
Towards the end of October, weekday night-time and weekend closures are due to start on the Holwell Road roundabout and on both sides of dual carriageway, south of towards Stoneferry roundabout. This is to undertake urgent concrete repairs to the road surface.
Some closures will be in place for approximately five weeks until around the first week of December. Holwell Road and Sutton Road will remain open to the public during peak hours during the week. Diversions have been planned and shall be clearly signposted for road users during the closures.
The £8m project is jointly funded with £7.5m from the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership, plus £500,000 from Hull City Council.
