More than three in four Hull holidaymakers are choosing staycations over holidays abroad, according to a survey.
A People’s Panel questionnaire asked 1,247 people in Hull about their most popular holiday destinations in the past five years.
And 78 per cent said they had chosen trips in UK and Ireland during that period.
It comes after a study by Thomas Cook revealed fewer British holidaymakers have booked a summer holiday inside the EU this year.
The travel firm said almost half (48%) of the holidays it sold up until the end of February were to non-EU destinations, up 10% on last year.
Despite this, Thomas Cook – through which 19 million people book holidays each year – said Spain is still its most popular destination among UK travellers. Turkey was second, with the two countries accounting for a quarter of its flight-only bookings so far.
In Hull, almost half (48 per cent) who took part in the People’s Panel survey in March and April – in which participants could give multiple answers – chose the Mediterranean, while 30 per cent picked northern Europe.
Some 16 per cent chose the Canaries or Azores, 13 per cent picked North America and 11 per cent said they had not been on holiday.
When asked about their preferred type of holiday, 63 per cent chose a city break, while 56 per cent picked a visit to the countryside and 53 per cent chose the beach.
Just under half (46 per cent) said tours and sightseeing, 34 per cent said camping and caravanning and 34 per cent answered with lakes and mountains.
More than half (53 per cent) said they looked for landscape and scenery when asked what they look for in a holiday. Just under half (47 per cent) said heritage and history, while just more than a third said food and drink (37 per cent) and relax and get away (36 per cent).
The same amount (36 per cent) chose the ease of getting there, while 28 per cent chose wildlife and nature.
