A Hull volunteer has taken it upon himself to challenge the city’s litterbugs.
Mark Ingleson of Charterhouse Residents Association teamed up with Hull City Council and Ashcourt Group to host a mass clean-up of the area close to Wincolmlee.
On Saturday 30 March, 20 volunteers came together to try to reduce fly-tipping in the area by encouraging residents to bring out unwanted items to be collected by the council.
Mark, part of the Active Citizens programme, is hoping his social action project will have a lasting impact in the area.
He said: “I’ve always been passionate about making a difference in my area, so I decided to join the Active Citizens programme.
“I completed 27 hours of training over a four-week period, which gave me the tools I needed to develop a project that would involve community different groups.
“Improving the environment is a priority for many local residents in this area and this is why we took it upon ourselves to declutter and tidy up the streets so that we can begin to improve the quality of life for the community.”
Volunteers will take part in a mass clean-up of an area close to Wincolmlee.
Active Citizens is a British Council initiative that encourages community-led social development by bringing together communities across the area to tackle the issues that matter to them. It also aims to promote social cohesion and civic engagement across these different groups.
Four skips were provided by Ashcourt Group and were filled with bulky items including fridges, sofas and shopping trolleys.
A spokesperson from Ashcourt Group, said: “Ashcourt are proud to be working alongside the Hull community and Hull City Council on such a positive project for the local area.”
Hull City Council officers including the Love Your Street team were also on hand to speak to residents about how they could dispose of their waste correctly and increase levels of recycling.
