Pupils across Hull should watch out for Hull FC and Hull KR mascots appearing at their schools this month.

Airlie Bird and Rufus the Robin will be visiting 15 schools in November as part of the Every Day Counts campaign, which encourages children to aim for 100 per cent school attendance.

Pupils who achieve 100 percent attendance in November will be entered into a prize draw, with Viking FM offering £250 for both children and parents plus 10 prizes of gift vouchers, concert tickets, cinema tickets and technology.

Children who have notified schools of medical appointments that cannot be made outside of school hours will not be excluded from the draw.

Jo Moxon, assistant director for learning and skills, said: “We know that pupils who attend school regularly are more than twice as likely to achieve five or more good GCSE grades than those who have high levels of absence. This in turn impacts upon successful further education and good career prospects.”

Headteachers from the city’s primary and secondary schools, alongside the council, launched Every Day Counts in September at the start of the new school term.

Prizes will be presented at the end of the academic year to students who have maintained 100 per cent attendance. They include invitations to Hull KR or Hull FC rugby clubs for a morning of activities and a chance to meet the players.
