Jack gets a Kickstart into new career with Hull City Council

An ambitious young man from Hull has used a national employment scheme as a springboard to begin an exciting career.

Jack Rimmington, 23, from west Hull, has secured a permanent position as Recruitment Assistant in Hull City Council’s HR department with the help of the Government’s Kickstart Scheme.

The council is an approved intermediary for the Government’s national Kickstart Scheme, which creates fully funded six-month placements of 25 hours per week for people aged from 16 to 24 on Universal Credit.

Jack said: “I had been working within the teams that make up human resources on tasks related to recruitment as part of the Kickstart Scheme. After that I was told about a position becoming available in the recruitment team.

“So far, I have really enjoyed my time with the council and really look forward to the future.

“I would definitely recommend the Kickstart Scheme to anyone who is out of work and may not have heard of it because it allows you to not only gain employment, but also helps you to develop yourself and your skills whilst being able to meet new people and build a network of professional connections.”

The scheme, run by the Employment Inclusion Team in the Employment Hub on the first floor of Hull Central Library, was launched in the city in November. It offers paid roles in a range of sectors such as design and engineering, administration and retail for ambitious young people.

Jack’s dream career ambition is to be a DJ or music producer, which he is currently following up in his spare time. He said he hopes the Kickstart Scheme will allow other young people to recover from setbacks relating to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I would like to thank Hull City Council and my previous line manager Sarah for giving me the opportunity to get back into work and start to develop my skills again after the pandemic unfortunately left me without a job,” he said.
