Taxi drivers can apply online for a free four-month licence to help them keep their businesses running.
The short-term licences have been introduced to prevent drivers having to undergo a full renewal application – which involves a fee and a visit to the council’s licensing offices.
The change, agreed by members of Hull City Council’s Licensing Committee, makes renewals simpler and safer, allowing licence holders to put off the usual payment until October and removing the need to visit the office.
Councillor Mike Thompson, portfolio holder for public protection, said: “Our licensing team has worked as quickly as possible to put this new temporary system in place so we can protect licence holders and staff.
“It’s one of many things we’re doing differently at the moment, to continue to provide a service alongside observing social distancing measures.
“While most people in the city should not be using taxis at the moment, there are still those who rely on them, including key workers. We really appreciate our drivers who are continuing to work, providing a vital service while complying with social distancing and taking precautions like disinfecting handles and seatbelts.
“A large number of licences expire at the end of June; these licence holders must apply for their four-month licence as soon as possible and by May 29 at the latest to ensure we can process applications. Only one application is needed no matter how many licences the applicant has to make it as simple as possible”.
All licence holders will receive a letter from the council to make them aware of the change.
Successful applicants will receive an electronic letter confirming their licence status and must keep their ID badges, as these need to be used in conjunction with the letter. A normal renewal application will still be required together with the appropriate fee before the expiry of any four month licence on 31 October.
