Hull to host 25th annual memorial service for road traffic victims

Hull will mark its 25th annual memorial service for those who have lost their lives on the city’s roads this Sunday (16 November).

For a quarter of a century, Hull has joined communities across the globe for the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, which is marked on the third Sunday of November every year.

The global event remembers everyone killed and seriously injured on roads, as well as acknowledging the suffering of victims, families and communities.

Anyone who has lost a loved one on Hull’s roads is warmly invited to attend the service, light a candle in remembrance, and bring a photograph to honour their memory.

The service will be led by Rev Tony Brookes, Chaplain at Hull Hospitals, and attended by Lord Mayor Councillor Cheryl Payne and Councillor Mark Ieronimo, portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council.

The Lord Mayor said: “My thoughts are with anyone who has gone through the pain of losing a family member or loved one in a road accident.

“We also pay tribute to those who are coping with a serious injury, where it’s also important to recognise those who are providing care for them.

“I am honoured to have been asked to read a poem at the service, and I hope that bringing people together who have these shared tragedies can in some way be a help to them.”

Yesterday (Thursday 13 November), Cllr Ieronimo laid a wreath on behalf of Hull City Council at the memorial stone for road traffic victims outside the Streetlife Museum.

Cllr Ieronimo said: “Every life lost on our roads is a tragedy, which is why it is so important that we do everything we can to ensure the roads are safe for everyone.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and the World Day of Remembrance sends a powerful message to all road users to take extra care.

“I hope families and friends will find comfort in Sunday’s service as they remember their lost loved ones.”

The service will take place at St Mary’s Church, Lowgate, on Sunday 16 November, with doors opening at 1.45pm and the service beginning at 2.30pm.
